Catching Up With…Michael Merlino, Class of ‘03
Michael Merlino is a graduate of Cumberland Valley High School and the Horticulture & Landscaping program at CPAVTS. He continues to share his expertise as a member of the OAC for Horticulture, and he stopped in this year to visit and demo some techniques with Mrs. Perry’s current students before Open House. We took advantage of this excellent opportunity to get some industry feedback from him.
Here is what he has been up to since graduating from CPAVTS’s program:
Describe the company or industry in which you currently work.
“Flower shop, I am an event designer, specializing in large scale weddings and events, along with daily flower shop needs.”
What is your job title and what do you do?
“I am a Design Room Manager, overseeing and designing weddings and events. Everything from Design to delivery. I oversee the staff to make sure everything gets done, and is done to customer satisfaction.”
What other employment have you had related to your program areas at CPAVTS?
“I had two, two week internships at a flower shop and two summers at a garden center.”
What additional education and training did you receive after leaving CPAVTS?
“I attended Penn College and got an A. A. S. in Floral Design and Plantscaping, I also attended HACC and got an Associate’s Degree in Business.”
How was Cumberland Perry different than your regular high school?
“More hands-on expression of abilities, and a small school feel accompanied by teachers and staff that seemed to really care and invest in their students.”
How has your industry changed since your time at Cumberland Perry?
“There is not as much need to visit a “flower shop” anymore, since flowers are available everywhere, so you really need to offer services.”
What is your favorite CPAVTS memory?
“Making friends for life and being able to plan a life path for myself in high school. I also enjoyed our flower sales and the FFA Fundraiser we did which was Kiss a Pig.”
